Six Rotary Clubs in District 5710 collaborate on a District Grant

Often victims and survivors of human trafficking lack the clothing, caps and gloves they need to keep warm on these cold winter days. The Rotary Clubs of Lenexa, Leawood, Shawnee Mission, CAAHT, Topeka South, and Manhattan combined efforts on a District Grant project to make 160 Rotary Cares Winter kits for victims of human trafficking. The total grant was $10,000. Each kit contained a hoodie, sweatpants, stocking cap, scarf, gloves, socks, blanket, hand warmers, mylar blanket, deodorant, chap stick, and protein bars. Rotarians met during November and December and assembled kits at sites in Topeka, Shawnee Mission, and Manhattan. The Rotary Cares kits were then distributed to nonprofit agencies.
RC of CAAHT and Topeka South packed 56 kits and distributed them to the YWCA Day Center and the Intersection to care (ITC) Program in Topeka.

Intersection to Care (ITC) Rotary Global Grant mission is to provide community reintegration services for vulnerable women leaving incarceration to prevent victimization into trafficking and sexual exploitation.
Committee membership is open to anyone interested in providing assistance to women leaving incarceration. Please contact Patti Mellard at 785-640-9999, patti@keystaffing.com for more information or if you would like to attend the meeting via Zoom.

We are looking for persons willing to help us support women leaving incarceration.  By volunteering as a Mentor you will provide a supportive relationship for a woman incarcerated at the Shawnee County Adult Detention Center and after release into the community.
Commitment is meeting your mentee once per week either in-person, via phone, or via email.

Your goals as a mentor are to:
  • Build a connection with a participant
  • Assist in goal setting, planning for release from incarceration
  • Connect participant to community resources
  • Guide participants through the Intersection to Care program and reintegration
  • Provide encouragement and nonjudgmental listening
  • Provide ongoing emotional support

Contact Melissa Goodman at mgoodman@mirrorinc.org for more information.

ITC Mentors needed!
